A couple of weeks ago I was reading a book called “Secrets of the Talking Jaguar.” It’s about a man named Martin who describes his journey of becoming a Shaman for a Mayan tribe in Guatemala.

Throughout the book, he describes handfuls of really interesting cultural practices about the Mayans. One thing that stuck with me was how male and females have different words for the same things. A knife serves a different purpose for a female than a male, therefore they have different names. In the book, Martin describes how fire is masculine but the job to start the fire is feminine.

All that to say that I failed epically to start this fire while trying to get a timelapse of the process. Jade came in to save the day though, and this is what we got. Don’t judge me, I’m usually a pretty good fire starter, just the book, you know, messed with my psyche…
