The Feel:
Hidden, out of the way, and nestled in the very back streets of the small tourist town of Bayahibe, this place is as hard to find as a black cat sleeping in the dark, but it’s the kind of spot that’s best stumbled upon anyway, or at least the kind of place your local friend who’s in the know takes you to.
Owned by a family of italians who have made the Dominican Republic their adoptive home, once you make it here, MoPa Cafe will make you feel like you’ve always known it. It’s hard to spot, but a must for great food in Bayahibe.
The Food:
We came in looking for a quick coffee and some internet to map out the rest of our route, and both were top notch, but we stayed a little longer for the fresh-out-of-the-oven guava pie. Holy Cannelloni was it warm and juicy!!
A quick glance at the menu enticed us with affordably promising eats, like home-made gnocchi, which we will have to go back to try. If they’re half as good as the pie and coffee, I’ll be happy.
Just check out all the mouth-watering pictures on their Facebook page and judge for yourself. Remember, they also have daily specials not on the menu!
The Staff:
The lady behind the counter recognized Gabriel right away from having bumped into us the night before at the supermarket. Sure, his ridiculously large hair is hard to miss, but this speaks more to the size of Bayahibe and the fact that this establishment knows their locals, and pays attention to the ins and outs of visitors.
Indeed, we didn’t get the chance to stay the evening, but based on the location alone, we’re assuming this place is frequented by locals only who treat each other like a giant italian family. Now, we know what happens when one assumes so, why don’t you go check it out and let us know if we don’t make it back first!!!
The Whole:
If you find yourself in Bayahibe, don’t miss a stunning sunset on one of the many beach-side restaurants, of course, but come here for a warm italian welcome and home-style meal for a VERY decent price, and stick around for a round of cocktails!.
