The Feel:
La Boca is situated on a river delta a few Kilometers east of Cabarete. It’s a considerable drive down a sandy road, and unless a local brings you, you’re not likely to find it.
This is a typical Dominican restaurant which was very popular, before the land got bought out for development, because the river delta is great for kite surfing. So every sunday this place used to fill up with locals and tourists alike, either spectating, or pulling tricks all day long.
Unfortunately, the land got bought out, and for a while we thought the restaurant was done for, along with access to the area.
As it turns out, the restaurant owner, Wilson, just moved across the river and set up a little ferry to take customers from one side of the river to the other.
The access to the area is still technically public, but the spot just hasn’t seemed to have picked back up in popularity since the sale.
Regardless, it’s a beautiful area to laze around for an afternoon and sip on a cold Presidente of Piña Colada in a pineapple.
The Food:
The food here is “sencillo” [simple, easy, plain] typical Dominican food.
No bells or whistles, served mostly on plastic dinner-wear.
You’ll get your fill of fresh fish, fried of course, accompanied by your typical rice and beans, “tostones” [typical fried plantains,] and a typical salad (cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes)
The fried fish is definitely delicious. The rice and Tostones are the just like you’d get at any other Dominican parada. Sure we’ve had better Dominican food, but this place is actually darn good.
The only reason we gave it three stars is that typical dominican food in general is just really not that exciting in our opinion.
It’s comfort food, lots of carbs, everything fried, and if you’re into that type of thing, then you’re sure to be pleased.
But even if you’re not, you just can’t leave the DR without having a Dominican meal.
And there’s really no better setting to get it than Wilson’s Restaurant at La Boca.
The Staff:
Indeed Wilson is one great guy. Sit here and talk to him about the history of the area and his future plans, he’s a very personable man, very knowledgeable in the history, and will gladly share his life story with you.
He was born right on this river, and isn’t planning on leaving any time soon.
This is one of the reasons you want to come HERE for your Dominican meal. This place is really genuine.
The Whole:
When you’re done with your meal you’ll be provided with a tub of water and a bar of soap.
To me, that just sums this place up. Yeah, it’s not a 5 star restaurant, but it’s real.
La Boca is an ideal place for a romantic afternoon: a simple meal, Piña Colada, and long walk on the beach.
Or come with a group of friends and bring your kite gear.
Either case, come enjoy great typical Dominican food in an environment that really should be a national park, not development land.
