Planning a Road Trip in the US, your ULTIMATE resource guide

Where to Stay

That really depends on you. If you’re used to the rest of the world’s backpacking trail loaded with youth hostels, I’m sorry buddy, you’re about to be reeeeeaaaaaaaaaal disappointed by the United States’ apparent disinterest in getting their youth to get out and get to know their own country. There are other great options though, and within some cities you will find good youth hostels. Check the Hosteling International website for a list of US hostels (conveniently placed on a map) But if you fall short, remember these alternatives:

  • Couchsurfing because it’s free and instantly introduces you to locals. (hint, you can use it just ot meet people too, not just stay)
  • Airbnb because it’s got really cool spots, and has awesome location guides which you can also use for planning, not just booking. (and if you’ve never used it, following the link will give you $30 credit, you’re welcome)
  • Camping because lodging in the states is ridiculously expensive sometimes. If you’re in busy season, remember to reserve.
  • Motels because it’s the ‘merican way. I recommend Motel 6. From my experience it’s the consistently not-so-dingy motel.
  • Roadtrippers will also show you a lot of off beat lodging options with links to their websites.

And don’t forget to ask around, if you’re going to be somewhere a few days, if anyone knows anyone who wants to rent out a room.

  1. Great idea! I think there’s nothing better than a cross-country road trip through the U.S.A. I’ve also done it dozens of times, and each time there is something new to see and do. And great websites to get the ball rolling.

    1. Ah, a fellow long-haul road-tripper :)

Glad you approve of the sites, feel free to add a few if you know of good ones! Or add to your favorite special locations, I know my list is far from complete!

      Thanks Corinne!
